The 2012 Clan Rally is planned
as a full week of activities starting and finishing Bunratty,
Co. Clare on the West coast. Participants should plan to arrive and stay
in Bunratty on the 24th June (the closest airport is Shannon).
The Rally itinerary is as
follows: [marked with letters to correspond to maps, which have corresponding
dates]
o 25
June leave Bunratty [A] to travel through Killarney, visiting the Lakes
of Killarney etc) to Macroom [B], where a major battle took place in 987AD
o 26 June
leave Macroom [A] and travel via
· Beal na mBalth [B], the
location of Michael Collins’s death,
· Carrigadroihid [C] to visit the Castle where Bishop Boetius MacEgan was executed
in 1649
· Aghinagh [D] where we will drive the Aghinagh Way, an archaelogical drive
organized by the Aghinagh Heritage Group, arriving in Coachford [E].
o 27 June
leave Coachford [A] and travel to Cobh [B], (formerly Queenstown) the departure point of many Irish
families for the USA, where we will enjoy the Queenstown Story .
o 28 June
leave Cobh [A] and travel via the Rock of Cashel [B] to
Roscrea [C] where we will visit the Roscrea Castle and Damer House; many archaeological
treasures have been found in the Roscrea area.
o 29 June
leave Roscrea [A] and travel to
· Athlone, [B] & [D] where we will visit the Castle and a Historic centre
nearby
· Fuerty,
Co. Roscommon [C] to visit the grave of the first Egan - MacAodhagain introduced
us to this headstone at the Rally in Hobart in 2010.
o 30 June
return from Athlone [A] to Bunratty [F] via Loughrea [B],
Redwood Castle [D] and Nenagh [E]; we hope to visit Redwood [D], if we
can gain admission at a reasonable price, and Lorrha [C].
o 01 July
a rest day in Bunratty to attend church services followed by the Banquet.
o 02 July
Dispersal.
